Biggest European electricity storage trial goes ahead

Contracts have been signed for a pioneering smart grid network and battery storage project that could help commercialise urgently needed electricity storage

S&C Electric has signed contracts with Samsung SDI, UK Power Networks and Younicos to prove the commercial viability of what it claims will be the largest smart network electricity storage project in Europe.

The 10-megawatt hour Smarter Network Storage (SNS) battery technology project is to be installed at UK Power Networks’ Leighton Buzzard primary substation. It will have a 6MW peak delivery capacity and is expected to save more than £6m compared with traditional grid upgrades.
