Thames Water seeks bill increase for London supersewer

The water company has asked Ofwat for permission to charge its customers an extra £29 next year. The money is largely needed to buy land for the Thames Tunnel

Thames Water customers are facing an extra charge of £29 in 2014/15, mainly to cover the cost of the Thames Tunnel.

The water company has asked Ofwat for the one-off rise in customer bills to help buy the £273m of land needed to build the tunnel. The extra money will also cover the cost of bad debt, extra Environment Agency charges and the additional 40,000 kilometres of household sewers it took on in 2011.

Ofwat has said it will question the company over the rise and the reasons behind it.
