Water firms need to cut carbon by 10% every five years

Ofwat needs to offer water companies carbon cutting incentives to help the sector contribute to UK climate goals, argues CIWEM.

Water companies “could and should” cut their carbon emissions by 10% every five years. This is the main conclusion of an outline plan for decarbonising the water industry published by the Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management (CIWEM) on 14 August.1

The plan sets out how the water sector can contribute to the Climate Change Act’s target of an 80% reduction in UK greenhouse gas emissions
