EFSA goes precautionary on chemicals

Until better information is available, a precautionary approach towards mixtures is warranted says the agency. It will begin assessing pesticide mixtures soon

The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has backed a precautionary approach to assessing the risks posed by chemical mixtures – so-called cocktail effects.

As part of this work it will soon begin assessing some pesticides for the cumulative risk they pose to health when combined with other pesticides.

EFSA says it has been prioritising work to address the risk from combined exposures to multiple chemicals “because of the challenges this poses for the authority’s scientific work”. A 2012 European Commission communication on mixtures was said to have lacked urgency (ENDS Report 449, p22).
