EU water rules require member states to monitor drug levels

Final details of revisions to the list of Water Framework Directive priority substances have been published

Member states must begin to monitor levels of three pharmaceutical substances in water by September 2015, under a revision to the 2000 Water Framework Directive and 2008 Priority Substance Directive.

The changes include legal limits for 12 new priority substances, revised limits for a further seven and biota standards for 11 substances to be measured in fish, shellfish or molluscs.
