DIY majors cut landfill disposal by four fifths

Leading DIY sector firms, such as B&Q and Homebase, have together cut their landfill tonnages by more than 80% and reduced packaging by a quarter since 2009

Eight do-it-yourself firms have collectively cut the waste they send to landfill by 83% in the past four years.

They also reduced product packaging by 25% over the same period.

The weight savings, calculated from a 2007 baseline, were made as part of a home improvement sector voluntary agreement managed by the Waste and Resources Action Programme (WRAP).

Argos, B&Q, Crown Paints, Focus DIY, Henkel, Homebase, Akzo Nobel and Wickes all signed up to the DIY sector deal which ran between 2009 and 2012. The firms together account for almost half of UK home improvement sales.
