EU 'still committed to' soil quality legislation

Officials say EU rules on soil quality remain on the agenda but the UK contaminated land sector is concerned over the uncertainty

The European Commission has not given up on its plan to adopt EU legislation on soil quality, officials insisted after the MEPs from the centre-right EPP group indicated it had been abandoned.

Confusion over the long-tabled EU Soil Framework Directive’s fate arose on 2 October when the commission announced it was considering withdrawing the existing legislative proposal as part of latest EU efforts to simplify European legislation and cut red tape.
