Grocery sector wastes 4.3Mt of food a year

Prevention of the significant burden of grocery sector waste could boost food industry investment and exports, says WRAP

 The UK’s grocery sector – including food manufacture and retailing – generated 6.5 million tonnes of waste in 2011, according to a Waste and Resources Action Programme (WRAP) report.

Waste on this scale has major economic consequences. The report finds that the grocery sector is currently disposing of £6.9bn worth of food and packaging waste each year – equivalent to 7% of UK household food and drink sales.
