Airports Commission backs runway expansion

The commission’s chairman says debates around climate impacts cannot hold back the expansion of runways in the south-east

 More airport runways are needed in London despite uncertainty over whether that is compatible with carbon budgets, according to the government’s Airports Commission.

“Our provisional view is that additional capacity will need to be provided alongside an overall framework for managing [carbon] emissions’ growth if we are to deliver the best outcomes in both environmental and connectivity terms,” said Sir Howard Davies, the commission’s chairman, in London on 7 October.
