Biffa buys part of Shanks for £9.5m

Shanks is set to raise £14m by selling its UK commercial and industrial waste business to Biffa and hiving off two material recovery facilities

Shanks announced the sale of its loss-making UK solid waste management business to Biffa for £9.5m on 15 October.

Shanks plans to concentrate on recycling and waste management services to UK councils instead in future.

The deal will see Biffa acquire Shanks’ UK commercial and industrial waste operations by the end of the year, with the transfer of around 300 employees. These operations cover the collection, sorting, treatment and disposal of a range of waste materials – including black bag refuse and commingled, mixed or separated recyclates.
