Ofwat rejects Thames Water bill hike

Ofwat has refused permission for an 8% increase in Thames Water customer bills next year in a draft decision. The regulator will make a final ruling in November

Ofwat has turned down Thames Water’s request to increase its 14 million customers’ bills by £29 next year. The economic regulator rejected the request in an 87-page draft decision on 16 October.

Thames Water had sought Ofwat’s permission for a one-off 8% bill rise in 2014/15 to buy land for Thames Tunnel construction. The extra cash was also earmarked for bad debt, extra Environment Agency charges and the cost of household sewers taken on in 2011.
