DEFRA cancels £91m support for Norfolk incinerator

The government has cancelled PFI support for a Norfolk waste incinerator due to the county council’s failure to obtain planning permission

The government has withdrawn £91m of private finance initiative (PFI) backing from Norfolk County Council’s energy-from-waste (EfW) project.

DEFRA is axing support for the project because the extra waste it will divert from landfill is likely to be above what is needed to meet the EU Landfill Directive target in England. The directive requires member states to reduce the amount of municipal biodegradable waste sent to landfill to 35% of 1995 levels by 2020.
