Sustainable drainage delays continue

DEFRA says sustainable drainage rules will be introduced next April. The governments of Wales and Northern Ireland have also made recent announcements on flooding.

Sustainable drainage. Credit: SusdrainThe Westminster government has rejected MPs’ call for higher flood defence spending in England and defended continuing delays in the implementation of rules on sustainable urban drainage systems (SuDS).

In its response to the House of Commons Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Committee, DEFRA says its recent deal with the Treasury which set flood spending for six years was “an excellent outcome” when set in the context of the “wider need to pay down the deficit”.
