First Welsh environment bill sets resources agenda

Clear definitions of natural resources and a new approach to sustainably managing them are being developed in Wales

The Welsh government is consulting on the principles behind the country’s first environment bill.

A white paper published on 23 October outlines strategic changes to the way in which Wales’ natural resources will be managed, saying the government considers this should be “about that more than exploitation for economic gain”.

It says Welsh regulation currently functions under a “narrow, reactive legislative framework… often viewed in isolation from economic and social policy” and it aims to take a more “joined-up and proactive approach”.
