Firms want ‘one in, one out’ rule for new EU laws

A government-established business panel is calling for an overhaul of EU policymaking, but seems to have few problems with existing environmental policy.

Europe should adopt a ‘one in, one out’ rule for new legislation – environmental or otherwise – according to a report from the government’s Business Taskforce issued on 15 October.1

It should also ensure any new rules pass “a rigorous test to demonstrate that they will boost European competitiveness”.

But the taskforce appears to have few problems with existing environmental policies. Its report calls for a handful of changes to chemicals, waste and planning rules to ease requirements on SMEs, but nothing that has not been raised before by industry or the government.
