Benyon out, as DEFRA’s ministers reshuffled

The Conservative MP Richard Benyon has been sacked from DEFRA in the most significant environmental move of the government’s ministerial reshuffle on 7 October

The Conservative MP Richard Benyon has been sacked from DEFRA in the most significant environmental move of the government’s ministerial reshuffle on 7 October.

Liberal Democrat MP David Heath, who was in charge for food and farming policy, also left the department for the backbenches.

Benyon’s departure as under secretary of state was surprising because he had some success during his time in the department, such as helping push for a ban on discards under EU fisheries policy and developing proposals for biodiversity offsetting (ENDS Report 464, p34).
