Leadership lacking on English waste

Large sections of the waste and resources sector are disappointed by the government’s failure to set out its own role on waste prevention in England.

The government is abrogating responsibility and failing to show leadership on waste prevention, according to responses to a DEFRA consultation on a waste prevention programme for England. The consultation closed on 24 September and the government needs to publish the programme by 12 December to comply with the EU Waste Framework Directive.

The comments of Matthew Farrow, then policy director at the Environmental Services Association (ESA), summed up the view of many in the waste and resources sector.
