UK aggregate levy exemptions could be suspended

The European Commission is investigating whether certain exceptions to the aggregates levy breach EU state aid rules

Credit: Vic BurtonThe European Commission has launched a formal investigation into whether specific exemptions and reliefs to the UK aggregates levy breach EU state aid rules.

A decision letter to the UK government, dated 31 July but not published until 13 September, states: “The exemptions and exclusions concerned seem to relieve the beneficiaries from a tax that they would normally have to pay and constitute operating aid.”1
