EU delivers mixed Kyoto target progress

The EU has exceeded its emissions reduction target but the jury is still out on energy efficiency and higher targets for 2030.

The EU has exceeded its greenhouse gas emissions reduction target under the Kyoto Protocol and is broadly on track to meet its 2020 goals on emissions reduction and renewable energy. But progress is patchy and energy efficiency targets are unlikely to be met overall, according to the European Environment Agency (EEA).1, 2

Its annual assessment released on 11 October looked at the bloc’s performance in meeting its commitments under the first Kyoto period up to 2012 and its progress towards meeting climate and energy targets for 2020.
