Standing up for sustainable development

DEFRA needs to be the voice in government speaking up for the environment, the precautionary principle, sustainable development and the post-Rio agenda.

Joan WalleyOne of the coalition’s earliest decisions in this parliament was to abolish its independent sustainable development watchdog, the Sustainable Development Commission. This left a gap in the structures for embedding sustainable development across government.

There are real concerns that DEFRA, which took on an enhanced role, leading on sustainable development in government, lacks the influence needed to fill this gap by making sure that other departments embed the principles of sustainable development in all that they do.
