UK bathing water quality posted record compliance results this year, DEFRA has reported. The figures mark a rebound from the poor showing caused by last year’s wet summer.
Mandatory standards set by the 2006 EU Bathing Water Directive were passed at 602 out of 608 (99%) designated UK beaches. In 2012 only 94% passed.
Failures are often caused by combined sewage overflows during heavy rainfall.
