DEFRA launches biodegradable bag competition

DEFRA is providing £150,000 to develop a plastic bag that decomposes quickly and harmlessly and can also be easily recycled

DEFRA is looking for innovative ways to speed up the degradation of plastic bags and reduce their environmental impacts. It also wants to improve the detection and separation of plastic bags and films.

The department has launched an 11-week £150,000 biodegradable bag competition to come up with practical answers to these problems. The idea is to transfer new technologies from “the laboratory to industry” and bring innovative ideas to market.
