Northern Ireland charts route to national marine protection

An ecologically coherent network of marine conservation zones (MCZs) is planned for Northern Ireland by the end of 2016, according to a draft guidance document out for consultation

An ecologically coherent network of marine conservation zones (MCZs) is planned for Northern Ireland by the end of 2016, according to a draft guidance document out for consultation.1

MCZs will complement existing European protected sites at sea and contribute to UK governmental targets to create an ecologically coherent network of marine protected areas for the UK.

Powers to designate MCZs in Northern Ireland’s inshore waters were taken in the recently passed Marine Act (Northern Ireland) 2013 (endsreport.com/40904).
