The Alliance Party of Northern Ireland is trying to reignite debate on an independent Northern Ireland Environment Agency (NIEA).
Plans to make NIEA independent of the Northern Irish environment department have long been debated. Environment minister Alex Attwood formally floated the idea last year (ENDS Report 439, pp 43-44).
But the move, which would require the Northern Ireland executive to approve legislation, has since stalled. A spokesman for the Alliance Party told ENDS that Atwood had failed to persuade the executive to even discuss the matter, leaving it “in limbo”.
