A survey has highlighted the importance of communication skills for sustainability managers

Communication skills are more important than technical expertise for successful sustainability managers, a survey has found.

The survey, by consultancy VOX Global and recruiters Weinreb Group, is based on interviews with sustainability staff at 32 US firms including big UK brands McDonalds, DuPont and Hilton.

The researchers found three drivers of success for sustainability managers: interpersonal skills, the ability to quantify the value of an initiative and expertise in subject matter.
