Facebook reveals its carbon footprint

Social network site Facebook has revealed its carbon footprint for the first time alongside information on energy use. The data show that Facebook’s annual carbon footprint is 285,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent.1

This equals an average 269-gram footprint for each user, reported to number 955 million globally in June. Energy-hungry data centres that support Facebook users’ activities account for nearly three quarters (207KtCO2e) of the footprint.
