Ground-source heat pumps for Sainsbury’s

Sainsbury’s endorsement of ground-source heat pumps and its innovative finance method could spur further interest in the technology.

Sainsbury’s is set to become the UK’s largest commercial user of ground-source heat pumps after announcing it would install the technology in 100 stores.

Its decision has in part been spurred by an innovative financial package offered by two suppliers: one from Geothermal International and the other from Eon with technology provider Greenfield Energy.

Sainsbury’s began investigating the potential of ground-source heat pumps in autumn 2010, when Greenfield Energy installed a system at its Crayford store in Kent.
