244 sites apply for EU ETS opt-out

A list of UK sites wanting to opt out of the EU emissions trading scheme has been submitted

A final list of 244 UK sites wishing to opt-out of the EU emissions trading scheme (EU ETS) from 2013 has been submitted to the European Commission for approval.1

It includes almost 70 hospital trust sites and associated energy facilities, 23 brickworks, 21 quarry and aggregate sites, 17 asphalt works and eight cement sites.

The energy and climate department (DECC) says its Small Emitter and Hospital Opt-out Scheme (ENDS Report 449, p 37) could save £80m in phase three of the EU ETS from 2013-20.
