‘Herculean’ task of ecosystem accounting

The true value of woodlands, wetlands and other habitats will be calculated to inform more sustainable policy making.

Ambitious plans for ecosystems accounting to track changes in the stock of natural capital and the value of the services they provide are being consulted on by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) and the environment department (DEFRA).1

The accounts will be used by the government’s official advisory body, the Natural Capital Committee, to recommend ways of protecting and improving ecosystems. The consultation follows a commitment made in last year’s natural environment white paper (ENDS Report 437, pp 42-46).
