Lawyers call for single statute on wildlife

Wildlife regulation could be consolidated into one statute with wider use of civil sanctions under Law Commission proposals.

A badger (credit: BadgerHero CCSA-3.0)The long list of laws regulating and protecting wildlife in England and Wales should be rewritten into a single statute, the Law Commission suggests.

The statute would extend the range of wildlife offences covered by civil sanctions and introduce broader powers on invasive species.

The proposals are the result of a Law Commission review of wildlife law which began last year (ENDS Report 439, p 9).
