Wood landfill ban proposed

DEFRA has issued a call for evidence on banning wood waste from landfill, but it says existing measures such as rising landfill tax may be enough.

A ban on landfilling wood in England is back on the agenda after the environment department (DEFRA) issued a call for evidence on 31 July.1

But a ban would only be introduced as a “last resort” and if it was expected to deliver environmental and economic benefits that would not have arisen anyway with increasing landfill taxes.

Landfill bans are common around the world and have been considered in the UK since the last government’s 2007 waste strategy (ENDS Report 389, pp 34-38).
