Flexible rules to boost carbon reporting

Mandatory carbon reporting proposals will boost reporting, but not necessarily its usefulness for benchmarking.

The government has published its long-awaited proposals for mandatory greenhouse gas reporting for UK quoted companies.1

A draft order covering the reporting of emissions in directors’ reports under the 2006 Companies Act was released in parallel with the consultation.2

But the measures are unlikely in themselves to result in standardisation that would allow better benchmarking between companies or sectors.
