Particulate risk from Clean Air Act review

Removing smoke control areas could have a “significant impact” on particulate emissions, according to an environment department (DEFRA) report on amending the Clean Air Act 1993.1

DEFRA is reviewing the act as part of the Red Tape Challenge (ENDS Report 446, p 8). The act prohibits ‘dark smoke’, imposes local smoke control areas, and controls smoke, grit and dust emissions from industry.
