Political commentary: Corporate reporting is an important step forward

The government’s decision to introduce mandatory reporting of greenhouse gas emissions for companies is a small but important step in the direction of greater corporate accountability and transparency on the environment.

Martin BaxterAs world leaders gathered for the Rio+20 Earth Summit in June, the UK government finally announced it would require listed companies to report their annual greenhouse gas emissions in directors’ reports. The environment department (DEFRA) estimates the much-delayed decision will cover roughly 1,100 firms, of which about 60% already report.
