DEFRA finds more cash for recycling rewards

The environment department has handed out a further £500,000 to encourage local recycling reward schemes

The environment department (DEFRA) has awarded £539,501 to support recycling reward schemes in 2012/13.

The schemes, run by councils or community groups, reward householders for recycling or re-using their waste. Residents can earn vouchers, cash or discounts on goods and services by recycling their waste.

DEFRA launched the funding in the waste review in June 2011, making £2m available over three years. Last year £492,594 was awarded; schemes will get a further £319,000 this year.
