Record levels of household waste recycled

Councils in England and Wales have for the first time recycled or composted more waste than they landfilled

Recycling. Credit: WRAPCouncil recycling rates in England and Wales reached a new height last year, according to the latest government statistics.

Annual figures from April 2011 to March 2012 show more waste was recycled, composted or reused than was sent to landfill for the first time.

English councils achieved 41.8% recycling, composting or reuse of municipal waste, but Welsh councils performed considerably better, recycling more than 50% for the first time.
