Record fine for London animal waste stench

A rendering firm belonging to the Prosper de Mulder group has been fined £120,000 for failing to prevent unpleasant odours

Animal parts renderer John Knight Ltd has been ordered to pay £186,150 after local residents complained of “repugnant” smells coming from its east London site.

The firm, which operates a plant in West Silvertown, Newham, was found to have breached its environmental permit by not using adequate methods to control concentrated or “foul” odours.

The London Borough of Newham brought nine charges against the company, which is part of the Prosper de Mulder group, for failing to properly prevent offensive odours being emitted beyond the factory boundary, which is contrary to its environmental permit.
