Take water risks more seriously, says CDP survey

Corporate awareness of water supply risks is improving, but more attention should be given to the problem in boardrooms

Water-related business risks do not feature highly enough at board level, according to the second survey of corporate water risk by the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP).1

The Global Water Report 2012, undertaken by consultancy Deloitte, asked 318 companies on the Global 500 list about their exposure to water security problems and the steps being taken to mitigate them.

This year’s survey found a marked improvement in corporate awareness of water-related risks and opportunities. Some 68% of respondents identified water as a substantial risk to their business, up from 59% in 2011. Just more than half said water-related problems had negatively affected their business in the past five years, a big increase on 2011 (38%).
