Veolia targets mixed plastic

Improved technology and growing demand are helping plastic recycling to accelerate.

The UK’s largest waste firm has opened its first plastic recycling facility in Rainham, Essex, to capitalise on growing council demand to divert rigid plastic packaging from landfill.

Veolia Environmental Services’ £5m plant is designed to sort a variety of plastic packaging found in household waste, including drinks bottles, trays, yoghurt pots and tubs.

The plant takes material from nine materials recovery facilities (MRFs) operated by Veolia across the country.
