UK prosecuted over London and Sunderland sewage overflows

The UK has been condemned by the Court of Justice of the EU for failing to fulfil its obligations under the Urban Waste Water Treatment Directive

Water overflow in London. Credit: Environment AgencyThe government faced the European Commission on 18 October at the Court of Justice of the EU to answer charges that two sewage systems failed to meet the requirements of the 1991 EU Waste Water Treatment Directive.

The court concluded that the UK had not fulfilled its obligations under the directive and it was ordered to pay the undisclosed sum of the commission’s costs.
