Drug water standards are ‘not justified’

Proposed EU water standards for three drugs have been questioned by a UK expert committee.

Drugs. Credit: Epsos.de CCA-2AAdopting an environmental quality standard (EQS) for anti-inflammatory drug diclofenac under EU water legislation is not justified because available data appears unreliable, a UK scientific committee has warned.

In a letter to water minister Richard Benyon, the environment department’s (DEFRA’s) Hazardous Substances Advisory Committee (HSAC) said there were “significant issues on water solubility… which may invalidate many of the tests”.1
