DEFRA pesticide ruling contested

DEFRA’s decision to allow ongoing use of neonicotinoid pesticides despite suspected harm to bees and other bugs could face a legal challenge

The environment department (DEFRA) has been threatened with a judicial review of its decision not to ban neonicotinoid pesticides. In a ‘letter before action’ sent on 5 November, seen by ENDS, invertebrate charity Buglife sets out detailed grounds for a possible legal challenge.

In September DEFRA published a review of recent evidence on neonicotinoids’ effects on bees, concluding there was insufficient evidence for a ban (ENDS Report 452, p 7). Buglife argues the review had three legal failings.
