Focus turns to enforcement of ‘fit for purpose’ water rules

The European Commission will focus on better implementation and enforcement of water laws after a review finds existing regulations offer enough protection

Europe’s water resources will be best protected by making better use of existing laws rather than producing fresh EU legislation, according to the European Commission.

Its review of water sector policy has concluded that current European legislation on drought and water scarcity is largely complete and fit for purpose.1

The long-awaited European water strategy, published on 15 November, mainly relies on better implementation and closer integration of existing laws to protect water resources over the next three to four decades.
