An inquiry into the government's plans to compensate energy-intensive industry for rising electricity prices was launched by the House of Commons Environmental Audit Committee in October.

It will examine “the rationale and design” of the compensation scheme and aims to take oral evidence in December.

From 2013, the business department (BIS) intends to compensate firms for rising electricity prices caused by the start of the third phase of the EU emissions trading scheme and its own carbon price floor.
