Choosing an ISO 14001 certifier

Certification bodies can be like dentists: one business associate will tell you that one particular certifier is excellent and then another will tell you the opposite. When selecting a certifier for the ISO 14001 environmental management system (EMS) there are some guidelines that can help organisations make an informed choice and know what to expect next.

Of course, an organisation can choose to implement an environmental management system without having it externally assessed by a certification body. But organisations usually want independent assessment. The choice of certifier can be important in maintaining their strategic goals for achieving the standard.
