New treatment provides hope for £2m a year zebra mussel menace

An ENDS survey shows the extent to which water firms are affected by the problem of zebra mussels. But a ‘Biobullet’ treatment system may provide a solution

Water company zebra mussel problemsMany water and sewerage companies are experiencing problems with zebra mussel infestations, according to a survey by ENDS. But a new treatment has given hope to firms, which spend more than £2m a year on cleaning clogged pipes and water treatment work intakes (see table).

Only Scottish, Northumbrian, Wessex, United Utilities and South West are not having problems with the invasive species.
