Offshore wind farm wins approval

The 64MW offshore wind farm Gunfleet Sands II is to be built five miles from Frinton-on-Sea in Essex after winning government approval.

The Business Department (BERR) said in March it had given consent to the project under the Electricity Act 1989. Danish firm DONG Energy aims to have it operational by the end of 2010, a year after the 108MW Gunfleet Sands I.

BERR also granted approval to two onshore wind farms: Renewable Energy Systems’ 85MW project in Keadby, north Lincolnshire, and Eon Renewables’ 66MW wind farm at Thorpe in South Yorkshire. Both are expected to be operational in 2010.

Some 588MW of onshore and offshore wind has won approval this year. In 2007, over 2.2GW capacity was approved.
