Local authority charges increase

Businesses regulated by councils under the pollution prevention and control (PPC) regime will see their charges in 2008/09 rise by 3%, with some additional one-off costs for transferring to the new environmental permitting regime in April, Environment Minister Jonathan Shaw announced on 11 March.1

Vehicle refinishers, for example, will see an increase of £190 in application and subsistence charges plus a one-off additional fee of £55 for each risk-assessed facility and £16 for each reduced fee activity.

Sites regulated under PPC for emissions to air only, but with a regulated waste activity as well, will pay an additional permit application fee of £285 and subsistence charges of £95, £143 or £190 depending on whether they are low, medium or high risk.

All PPC sites will pay £95 to meet councils’ costs from reporting requirements under the European Pollutant Release and Transfer Protocol.
