What is private equity?
Private equity is medium to long-term finance provided in return for a stake in potentially high-growth companies that are not publicly listed on a stock exchange. Private equity firms themselves are often general partnerships, although some are listed companies. The finance they provide comes from forming limited partnerships with other institutional investors such as pension funds.
