Abattoir fined for discolouring stream

A Wigan abattoir that inadvertently poured 40 gallons of blood into a brook was fined £8,000 and ordered to pay £470 costs by Wigan magistrates court on 16 January.

The company, James Strange & Co of St Stephen's Way, pleaded guilty to allowing polluting matter to enter Slede Brook and Red Pond last April.

The abattoir usually disposed of waste blood down a foul sewer connected to a sewage treatment works. On 6 April 2002, however, the company poured it down the wrong drain, leading to the discolouration of the brook and pond.
